President's Message
Kentucky State University is committed to making the earth a more sustainable environment for generations to come. Beyond the traditional measures of recycling, hosting community discussions about environmental sustainability and design, finding friendlier ways to farm and greener ways to live, we know that we need to train students to be innovative thinkers so they can find solutions to the nation’s and world’s problems. To that extent, we will begin the master’s of environmental studies in January 2010. This comprehensive graduate program combines core courses in ecology, biostatistics, energy and environmental study with electives in ethics, resource economics, sustainable agricultural systems, bioremediation and aquatic ecology.
All of our students will complete a capstone project and a team project, where they will work on a community assessment or enhancement project for a semester to implement what they have learned. With this hands-on knowledge, these students will be armed for the workforce once they graduate to staff the number of jobs in government, nonprofit, private, higher education and other sectors that address the expanding global ecological problems.
We invite you to explore the site and contact us with further questions. We are excited about the possibilities that the master’s in environmental studies brings to our campus. It is one more way that we continue to inspire innovation, grow leaders and advance Kentucky.
Mary Evans Sias, Ph.D.
